Life begins at the Living Room
City Gates has had a presence in Soho for many years. Today, the work there continues at The Living Room, our cafe and community space. Tucked away in a little alleyway, this cosy venue, with its vintage decor and friendly welcome, provides a haven for people from all walks of life. Projects we currently run from there include: a homeless drop-in, outreach to workers in the red light district, and a range of classes and workshops. All these activities are provided for free, thanks to our team of dedicated volunteers and the generosity of our supporters. We are very thankful that we can make use of this valuable resource.

Feeding homeless and vulnerable people every Monday
RED LIGHT CHAPLAINCY
First-time visitors to the Living Room often comment on the special “atmosphere”. We know that’s all because of Jesus! If you are one of the many people who have prayed, worshipped and served there, you have contributed to making it a place of blessing. One homeless guest commented that the Living Room is the one place they have found where they feel safe to be themselves.
Bringing hope to women working in flats in Soho
To keep our doors open to those in need, we raise some of our funds from the cafe itself. It runs as a regular business during the week, selling freshly made food and drinks. Afternoon tea is very popular! The rest of our costs are covered by grants and donations. This year we face a particular fundraising challenge, as Westminster Council wants to double the rent we have been paying, to over £30,000 per year. That’s a lot of lattes. We want to stay where we are, to continue to nurture the relationships we have and to be a beacon of light in the darkness. Can you help us?
