Welcome to City Gates Church
City Gates Church has been meeting in central London since 1985 with a vision to love God, love each other and love the world. CGC's pastor Barney Skrentny and our leadership team desire that our church builds community in this vibrant city. Central to this vision are our small Home Groups that meet across London. As we meet together we believe that God speaks to us and that we can engage with him. Do visit us on a Sunday - we believe that it will play a part in your spiritual journey. Find us on Facebook!
Please join our City Gates Soho group for events, discussions, photos etc.

Word for the Week
The Last Word
What is there to say to sum up 14 years of leading CGC and 4 years of writing the ‘Word for the Week’? One thing comes to mind, that has often featured in my ramblings in the e-bullet. What do I want for the future of CGC? The answer is ‘so many things’. But up around the top of the list is that we will be & become a people who pray. God is doing many things, and wants to do so many more. CGC has been planted like a lighthouse in the middle of the city – to give light and direction to anyone who cares to take notice. For this to be a greater reality for our church – we have to pray and ask God to shape us the way He wants. As we pray, God changes us, God changes situations and God pushes back the enemy. My prayer is that everyone at CGC grows as people of prayer, and that together we learn to pray with passion, hunger and faith. I have come back to God again & again over the years with the promise from Isaiah 62 that has been so important to CGC: “On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent. You who put the Lord in remembrance, take no rest, 7 and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it a praise in the earth.” Never neglect to be in prayer – God will answer.
Have a great week. Much love, Matt
This Sunday 28th

India team visit update 1 of 2 Dear All, The team got to India safely, sadly without Richard who broke his ankle the evening before leaving the UK. Ashley has stepped up to lead the team and having been before will be able to co-ordinate an effective and enjoyable trip for all. Speaking to Ashley on the phone on Wednesday eve, he reports that they had a good trip through Bangalore, going to some shopping places and generally enjoying the city sites, smells and sounds which are varied and quite different from the UK. Their car journey south took 3.5 hours and they arrived at the church / orphanage compound where they will be the guests of Rev Glory Dhas and his family. Glory heads Jesus Mercy Home Association (JMHA) www.jmhammm.com and the team will as of tomorrow, start visiting and contributing their time and gifts in anyway they can. A visit to a village literacy project, meeting the village pastor’s bible school, and teaching in the nursing school all run by JMHA, is on the cards for tomorrow. They request your continued prayers for effectiveness, enjoyment, safety and usefulness over their visit.

Please let Xanthe know if you're bringing some so she can arrange transport home - Xanthe and Nick
Homeless Ministry at City Gates Church – do you want to be involved? For many years Graham Salt (a member of our church) has ministered to homeless people in the West End. To allow this ministry to be more effective, we are looking for a few people who feel called to take part in this ministry alongside Graham. Currently we would like to put together a small team to reach and help homeless people on Mondays in the early evenings based at our church centre. You will need a heart for people, a commitment to reaching people for Christ – and a willingness to ‘get your hands dirty’. If you want to know more, please contact the church office, or email Graham.
Can you serve our children at CGC? The children at our church are in need of a couple more people to join the team that teach and have fun with them each Sunday. We need 3 people in the 1-4 age group to enable us to provide a session for them every Sunday. Please contact the office if you are willing to step into this. A full introduction and CRB check will be provided for you. Full time ministry I would like to know if you are planning, hoping or beginning to feel called to Christian ministry. This could be pastoral leadership, overseas mission, or evangelism. Let me know! Blessings, Barney

Word for the Week
Keeping Hold of God in the Midst of Life
Probably every one of us, if asked how we are, would reply "Busy" (among other things). It's one of the features of life, especially in London, that we are busy - or at least we feel busy. In the midst of our busy-ness and our focus on the many features of our own lives it's easy for Christians to become practical atheists (or at least Deists). What do I mean? We can forget God's activity all together - and forget that we are His ambassadors. We can behave as if He doesn't exist, or that He isn't involved in our lives in any real way. We don't talk to Him. We don't ask Him how He wants us to behave in any situation. We respond to other people in the same way as if we didn't know Him. We get as stressed and anxious as any pagan. (I admit this is a bleak and not wholly representative picture!). However, Christianity and a relationship with the dynamic triune God is not restricted to those who aren't busy. The trick, is embracing God in the midst of the madness of our lives & city. Praying throughout the day. Remembering that we are called by Him for an eternal purpose. Being mindful of the fact that the people around us are loved by God, and shouldn't be targets for our anger & scorn. "God is our refuge & strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea." (Psalm 46:1-2). Have a great week. Love, Matt

Big thank you! Thank you to everyone that has voiced an interest in supporting Dawn. So far we have raised close to £3000 in pledges. If you would like to start giving monthly or a one off donation toward supporting Dawn’s ministry in City Gates please contact our church office.
Gift Aid Tax relief for charities Gift Aid is a great and easy way to help CGC maximise the value of your donations, as we can reclaim tax from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) on its 'gross' equivalent - its value before tax was deducted at the basic rate (20%). In addition, HMRC will automatically pay us a further three pence for every pound donated. This ‘transitional relief’ - to adjust to the fall in basic rate tax (from 22 per cent to 20 per cent) - is available on Gift Aid donations made from 6 April 2008 until 5 April 2011. This means that for every £1 donated, we can receive 28 pence, so the total value of the donation is £1.28. Tax relief for donors If a donor is a higher rate taxpayer, they too can benefit from tax relief as they can claim back the difference between the higher rate of tax at 40 per cent and the basic rate of tax at 20 per cent on the total value of the donation - a total of 20 per cent. So if £1 was donated, the gross donation would be £1.25, so the donor could claim 25 pence back (20 per cent of £1.25). Please see Kay Brown at church this Sunday to fill in a Gift Aid declaration for all your donations.

Word for the Week
Taking to the Streets As I say often at CGC - we've regularly been taking the good news onto the streets of London over the last 25 years. It's also one of my favourite activities - and there are a number of people who are members of our church who are here because a Christian spoke to them on the streets. Every Friday evening, Heidi (our missionary to Soho's red-light area) and other's take to the streets of Soho. This Saturday we are doing the same - taking coffee, prayer, the gospel and our friendliness to the streets again. Take your fears in hand, and join us in taking the kingdom of God to the thousands in the West End. 1pm at the church centre, 3 Greens Court, W1F 0HD (map on CGC website).
Have a great week. Love, Matt
