Why Belong to a Small/Cell/House/Home/Bible-Study Group?

They can be dull. I am busy. I'd rather be watching Heroes. There are some weird people in my group. The singing doesn’t sound like the Hillsong Conference!

There is one reason above all that I think trumps all of these (even if they are true some of the time) - and this is it:
The only way to do/be Christianity is in close contact with other Christians. Trying to do it with just acquaintances isn’t enough. You need brothers and sisters who you are willing to befriend, be honest with and to share your life with. The New Testament letters are addressed almost entirely to groups, and not to individuals.
So, unless we are in meaningful contact and relationship with a small number of other Christians, the Christian faith will be very difficult.
Church small groups (we call them cells at CGC) are not guaranteed to provide this kind of life (in fact many of us have been in groups that have not been like this!). But unless we are willing to commit ourselves to a group of other Christians - we will never find this. Small groups are not always easy to be part of - although they can be wonderful - but we need to choose to be those who invest ourselves in the lives of others who are also trying to follow Jesus.
If you haven't joined a cell group - then may I recommend one to you. And if you are part of one - let me encourage you that even when it may be a challenge, keep investing your heart and your prayer in this group of brothers and sisters.
