Is Jeremiah in Chaos? PDF Print E-mail

Lately I’ve been reading the book of Jeremiah again. In reading the book itself, and some notes about it I realise that the book is not written in chronological order, unlike most bible books. Much of it is out of sequence, and therefore reading it through from start to finish can be a little confusing. Especially as much of the book can be difficult to understand anyway.
So, for any of you planning to read Jeremiah in the near future – here is some information on the chronological order of the book that may help.

In spite of the fact that Jeremiah is not all all in chronological order, it is possible to date many of its sections because they contain historical details that we can date. These sections are listed here with their dates.

1. In the reign of Josiah            640-609BC
In the 13th year                   Chapter 1
Later in this reign                 Chs. 2-6
Possibly much of chs. 7-20 is to be dated in Josiah’s reign

2. In the reign of Jehoahaz         609 BC
     None

3. In the reign of Jehoiakim        609-596BC
Early in this reign                   Ch.26; and probably 7:1-8:3; 22:1-23
    In the 4th year                      Chs. 25; 36; 45; 46:1-12
After the 4th year                  Ch. 35

4. In the reign of Jehoiachin        598-597BC
                                                  Ch.22:24-30; possibly Ch.14

5. In the reign of Zedekiah          597-586BC
In the beginning                         Chs. 24; 49:34-39
 In the 4th year                           Ch. 27-28; 51:59-64
In unnoted years                        Chs. 21; 29
During the early part of siege      Ch. 34
During the break in the siege      Ch. 37
During the resumption of siege   Chs. 32; 33; 38; 39:15-18

6. In Judah after the fall of Jerusalem  586-BC
                                                       Chs. 39:1-4; 40:1-43:7

7. In Egypt after Jeremiah was taken there 582-BC
                                                            Chs. 43:8-44:30

I have now read Jeremiah through in chronological order, and it makes a lot more sense. Below is a reading plan for the whole book (52 chapters) that takes into account all that is above and places the chapters of the book in an approximate order. It would be worth reading the book alongside the corresponding chapters in 1 & 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles.

Jeremiah 1-24
Jeremiah 45
Jeremiah 25
Jeremiah 45-49
Jeremiah 27-29
Jeremiah 50-51
Jeremiah 30-33
Jeremiah 21
Jeremiah 34
Jeremiah 37-39
Jeremiah 52
Jeremiah 40-44

Be thankful for our justice system! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Matt Frost

A member of our church who works in a court in north London sent these to me. I have checked, and for once they appear to be genuine.

These are from a book called Disorder in the American Courts and are things people actually said in court, word for word, taken down and now published by court reporters who had the torment of biting their lip to stay calm while these exchanges were taking place.

Q: What is your date of birth?
A: July 15.
Q: What year?
A: Every year.
_____________________________________________________________
Q: This myasthenia gravis, does it affect your memory at all?
A: Yes.
Q: And in what ways does it affect your memory?
A: I forget.
Q: You forget? Can you give us an example of something that you've
forgotten?
______________________________________________________________
Q: How old is your son, the one living with you?
A: Thirty-eight or thirty-five, I can't remember which.
Q: How long has he lived with you?
A: Forty-five years.
_________________________________________________________
Q: What was the first thing your husband said to you when he woke up
that morning?
A: He said, "Where am I, Cathy?"
Q: And why did that upset you?
A: My name is Susan.
______________________________________________________________
Q: Do you know if your daughter has ever been involved in voodoo or the
occult?
A: We both do.
Q: Voodoo?
A: We do.
Q: You do?
A: Yes, voodoo.
______________________________________________________________
Q: Now doctor, isn't it true that when a person dies in his sleep, he
does know about it until the next morning?
A: Did you actually pass the bar exam?
______________________________________________________________
Q: The youngest son, the twenty-year-old, how old is he?
______________________________________________________________
Q: Were you present when your picture was taken?
______________________________________________________________
Q: So the date of conception of the baby was August 8th?
A: Yes.
Q: And what were you doing at that time?
______________________________________________________________
Q: She had three children, right?
A: Yes.
Q: How many were boys?
A: None.
Q: Were there any girls?
______________________________________________________________
Q: How was your first marriage terminated?
A: By death.
Q: And by whose death was it terminated?
______________________________________________________________
Q: Can you describe the individual?
A: He was about medium height and had a beard.
Q: Was this a male, or a female?
______________________________________________________________
Q: Is your appearance here this morning pursuant to a deposition which I
sent to your attorney?
A: No, this is how I dress when I go to work.
______________________________________________________________
Q: Doctor, how many autopsies have you performed on dead people?
A: All my autopsies are performed on dead people.
______________________________________________________________
Q: ALL your responses MUST be oral, OK?
A: Yes.
Q: What school did you go to?
A: Oral.
______________________________________________________________
Q: Do you recall the time that you examined the body?
A: The autopsy started around 8:30 p.m.
Q: And Mr. Dennington was dead at the time?
A: No, he was sitting on the table wondering why I was doing an autopsy.

______________________________________________________________
Q: Are you qualified to give a urine sample?
______________________________________________________________

Q: Are you sexually active?
A: No, I just lie there.
_____________________________________________________________
Q: Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check for a pulse?
A: No.
Q: Did you check for blood pressure?
A: No.
Q: Did you check for breathing?
A: No.
Q: So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you began the
autopsy?
A: No.
Q: How can you be so sure, Doctor?
A: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar.
Q: But could the patient have still been alive, nevertheless?
A: Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive, practicing law
somewhere.

My thoughts on 1Peter 2:10-12 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Matt Frost

10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. 12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.

v.10  Before we came to Christ we were lost and dying individuals, but since we were born again we were not just saved individually, but we are made part of God's new people. YHWH had a people before (Israel), and now He has taken a remnant of the Jews, and added to them Gentiles who have come to Christ to make a new people.
This is the description of this new people - they are the people who have received mercy (the "you" in this sentance relates to the church, not just to an individual). Wouldn't it be wonderful if the greates thing that the world saw about the church was that we were the people who had received mercy - this was our greatest chracteristic.
v.11 Peter calls these believers beloved. Church leaders need to have this kind of love for their people. I like the word 'urge; it's not a command but a strong encouragement; an excellent way to be leading people. A sojourner is some one who is staying some where that is not their home (like a visitor). An exile is someone who has to live in a foreign country- away from home. This is us, and needs to be our attitude- we do not be long here, the world'S values are not ours, our culture should be completely different.
In the light of this we should abstain from passions of the flesh - these are things that are driven by our bodies that can damage our souls (mind, emotions). E.g. Gluttony, sexual lusts, drunkenness, addictions. These are not neutral, they affect our souls- they wage war against our minds and emotions.
v.12 Why does Peter refer to those outside as gentiles. The previous verses have sounded a lot like he was addressing Jews, but the statements do only apply to the church - both Jew & Gentile. Is he using Gentile as as a shorthand for non-Christians? Or is he thinking of the Gentiles within the community who are living a pagan lifestyle, rather than Jews who are living differently?
Whichever it is, we are meant to live honourably among them. What does it mean to be honourable - but it suggests being people who are honoured by others because of our lifestyle (and perhaps also that we are giving honour to others). This is a huge challenge, living a life that makes non-Christians want to honour us - amazing!
Both then and now people speak against Christians because of things they have heard or think they know about us. So often when people meet and get to know a Christian they say things like "I never met a Christian who is so kind/honest/helpful etc.". When people get to know us it should dispel the myths they have about Christianity (not confirm them!). Our lifestyles therefore need to be so different from the world around us, and if they are it will lead people to Christ, and encourage them to glorify God and get ready for His return.

DaVinci Code Limerick PDF Print E-mail

A few weeks ago I spoke at the Sunday morning service about the historicity of the bible, and showed a clip from the DaVinci Code film which I endeavoured to show contained a lot of rubbish.

I was chatting to my sister about this, and in honour of the occasion whe wrote a limerick:

There was a young pastor called Matt
Who says DaVinci Code's tat.
It's making up tales,
for the sake of book sales.
And should be accepted as that.

 Amen!

Tube Driver's Announcements PDF Print E-mail
Written by Matt Frost
Wednesday, 07 March 2007 11:22

Below are some genuine [whenever you read the word "genuine" in something like this you can almost guarantee that someone has made it up - however, that doesn't stop it being funny] announcements made by tubedrivers, on the London Underground.

"To the gentleman wearing the long grey coat trying to get on the second carriage, what part of 'stand clear of the doors' don't you understand?"

**********************************************************
At Camden town station (on a crowded Saturday afternoon):
"Please let the passengers off the train first. Please let the passengers off the train first. Please let the passengers off the train first. Let the passengers off the train FIRST!
Oh go on then, stuff yourselves in like sardines, see if I care, I'm going home."

**************************************************
"Ladies & Gentleman, upon departing the train may I remind you to take your rubbish with you. Despite the fact that you are in something that is metal, fairly round, filthy and smells, this is a tube train for public transport and not a bin on wheels"

**************************************************
"Ladies and Gentlemen do you want the good news first or the bad news?"
"The good news is that last Friday was my birthday and I hit the town and had a great time. I felt sadly let down by the fact that none of you sent me a card! I drive you to work and home each day and not even a card!"
"The bad news is that there is a point's failure somewhere between Stratford and East Ham, which means that we probably won't reach our destination. We may have to stop and return. I won't reverse back up the line - simply get out walk up the platform and go back to where we started. In the meantime if you get bored you can
simply talk to the man in front or beside you or opposite you."
"Let me start you off: "Hi, my name's Gary how do you do?""

***********************************************
"Your delay this evening is caused by the line controller suffering from elbow and backside syndrome, not knowing one from the other.
I'll let you know any further information as soon as I'm given any".

***********************************************
"Please mind the closing doors..." The doors close...The doors reopen.  "Passengers are reminded that the big red slidey things on the side of the train are called the doors! . Let's try it again, shall we?
Please stand  clear of the doors." The doors close... "Thank you."

************************************************
"I am sorry about the delay, apparently some nutter has just wandered into the tunnel at Euston. We don't know when we'll be moving again, but these people tend to come out pretty quickly...usually in bits."
