History

When City Gates Church began in 1985, it was a joint project of Ichthus Christian Fellowship and Youth with a Mission. The church first met in Long's Court behind Leicester Square. It went on to meet in a cinema, a dance school, a comedy club, a hotel and a university! In 2013, we began to use All Hallows on-the-Wall near Liverpool Street in the morning, and a room underneath the Living Room Cafe in Soho in the evening.

Though our morning meetings are now in the City, we remain committed to the Soho. We work amongst Soho’s many communities, including rough sleepers, sex workers, foreign students and local residents.

Russell Grubb led City Gates for the first ten years; the leadership then passed to Matt Frost, who is now pastor of Cirencester Baptist Church. Our leader since 2009 is Barney Skrentny, who was part of the church when it was reasonably new. When he married Shirley in 1988, it was the first City Gates wedding!

In 2004 City Gates Church moved into a different relationship with Ichthus Christian Fellowship – independent, but still grateful for its heritage. In 2008, City Gates became a founding member of Trinity, a network of forty Christian leaders spanning six nations.
